We describe a new pycnogonid species,Pantopipetta lenissp. nov., collected from 141-152 m depth in southern Japan, North Pacific Ocean.Pantopipetta lenisclosely resemblesPantopipetta auxiliataandPantopipetta oculatain having auxiliary claws on the legs, but differs from them in lacking dorsodistal tubercles on the lateral processes, having the first short distal article of palp shorter than combined length of the other three short distal articles, having one slight dorsal tubercle on the coxa 1 of legs, having a short dorsal tubercle on the coxa 3 of legs, and lacking a long dorsodistal tubercle on the femur of legs. The palp base (the short article-like structure proximal to the longest palp article) inP. lenisis articulated with the cephalon, i.e. it is actually an article. Although the palp base has been regarded as a lateral process of the cephalon, it is the first article of the palp inP. lenis.

We describe Zeuxo ezoensis sp. nov. from Hokkaido, Japan. This species closely resembles Z. phytalensis, Z. shitipingensis and Z. turkensis in having the pleopodal endopod with one inner plumose seta, maxillipedal palp article 4 with one outer simple seta, the left mandible with a wide, denticulate lacinia mobilis and one bifurcate accessory seta, and the right mandible with a peg-like lacinia mobilis and two accessory setae. It differs from them in having (1) antennal article 6 longer than wide, (2) the distal region of the maxillipedal endite with four spiniform setae and two circumplumose setae, (3) maxillipedal palp article 2 with one outer simple seta, (4) the chelipedal carpus with three or four dorsodistal simple setae, (5) the chelipedal dactylus with one inner simple seta, (6) the pereopod-1 basis with one or two ventrodistal simple setae, (7) the pereopod-1 carpus with one ventrodistal simple seta, and (8) the uropod with four or five articles (basal article plus three or four ramus articles). Partial nucleotide sequences for the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene (655 nt) from Z. ezoensis specimens from four localities in Hokkaido showed Kimura 2-parameter (K2P) divergences of 0–0.5% and 0.6–1.5% within and between populations, respectively. Based on the COI data, we examined the phylogenetic position of Z. ezoensis within Zeuxo. Six specimens used for morphological observations and 10 specimens used for COI sequencing showed a similar dorsal pigmentation pattern on carapace. We briefly discuss the validity of using this pattern as a diagnostic character in Zeuxo taxonomy.

Objective: This randomised, double-blind placebo-controlled study compared the efficacy and tolerability of escitalopram (10 and 20mg/day) in Japanese patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Research design and methods: Patients aged 18-64 years with a primary diagnosis of DSM-IV-TR defined SAD, a Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale Japanese version (LSAS-J) total score ≥60 and a Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S) score ≥4 at baseline were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to placebo, escitalopram 10mg or 20mg. The primary endpoint was change from baseline to Week 12 in the LSAS-J total score for both escitalopram 10mg and 20mg versus placebo (ANCOVA, FAS, LOCF), using a hierarchical testing procedure. Pre-specified secondary endpoints included LSAS-J sensitivity analyses. Clinical trial registration: This study has the www.japic.or.jp identifier: JapicCTI-121842. Results: For the primary efficacy endpoint, the difference from placebo in the LSAS-J was -3.9 (p=0.089) for escitalopram 10mg. Since the superiority of escitalopram 10mg over placebo was not confirmed, an analysis without multiplicity adjustment was made, which showed a difference for escitalopram 20mg versus placebo of -9.8 (p<0.001). In pre-specified sensitivity analyses, the difference versus placebo was -4.9 (p=0.035) (ANCOVA, FAS, OC) and -5.0 (p=0.028) (MMRM, FAS) (escitalopram 10mg) and -10.1 (p<0.001) (ANCOVA, FAS, OC) and -10.6 (p<0.001) (MMRM, FAS) (escitalopram 20mg). Common adverse events (incidence ≥5% and significantly different from placebo) were somnolence, nausea and ejaculation disorder. Conclusion: Escitalopram was efficacious, safe and well tolerated by patients with SAD in Japan. Study limitations are discussed including patient characteristics.

This paper presents examples of collaboration between anime producers and the Japan Self-Defense Force. By situating the transitions within the context of the broader trends in collaboration between anime producers and locations (namely, the development of contents tourism), the key turning point in anime producer - JSDF collaboration is be identified and explained. Then, the reasons why in recent years JSDF has been actively collaborating with the production of pop culture contents in the realms of fantasy and fiction with an anime fanbase will be discussed. What is happening in Japan today is a fantasization (= contentsization) and consumption of the military, rather than a 'drift to the right' or resurgence of militarism. The pressures to produce military or 'moe military' anime are driven by the market rather than the military.

We describe Paradoxapseudes shimojiensis sp. nov. from a submarine limestone cave at Shimoji-jima Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. This species resembles five species (P. basibidens, P. bassoprofundo, P. bermudeus, P. edgari, and P. heroae, among 17 congeners) that bear a long pleotelson, but differs from them in having (i) a naked antennal article 1, (ii) the maxillipedal basis with one inner distal plumose seta, (iii) the chelipedal basis with one dorsodistal and one ventro-subproximal simple setae, (iv) the pereopod-1 basis with four dorsal simple setae longer than the width of the pereopod-1 basis, but without ventrodistal spiniform setae, (v) the pereopod-1 merus with three mid-inner ventral simple setae, and (vi) the pleopodal protopod with two inner plumose setae. We determined partial nucleotide sequences for the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S rRNA (18S) genes in P. shimojiensis for future use in DNA barcoding and phylogeny. Paradoxapseudes shimojiensis has serial ridges on the inner surfaces of the left and right chelipedal bases that quite resemble the stridulatory organs in harvestmen (Opiliones); by analogy, we speculate that these ridges may be stridulatory sound-producing organs. Two specimens had both a fully-developed marsupium and genital cone, suggesting that P. shimojiensis is simultaneously hermaphroditic.

The larval morphology of the genus Hydrocassis Fairmaire, 1878 is described on the basis of three species of the genus: second instar of H. jengi Satô, 1998, all instars of H. lacustris (Sharp, 1884) and second and third instars of H. uncinata Ji et Schödl, 1998; the former two belong to the H. scapulata species group and the latter to the H. scaphoides species group. Primary chaetotaxy of the larval head of Hydrocassis is described based on the first instar larvae of H. lacustris. Larval morphology of all genera of Sperchopsini with known larvae is summarized based on descriptions and figures from the literature, which are compared with Hydrocassis: larval morphology of Hydrocassis is similar to that of Sperchopsis, and the presumably closely related genus Ametor is distinguishable from Hydrocassis by characters of larval morphology. A key to the Sperchopsini genera on the basis of larval characters is provided.
