“-Concerning the Essence of the Meridians”- without a background of understanding and perception of the structural, motor and physiological functions of the living body it is not easy to discuss this theme. I would like to present my opinions from the point of view of the theory of ZOFU (visceral) meridianology, major in physical function as explained by Oriental medicine.1) Discussion of Ancient Medical TextsCentered on the writings of the SOMON, REISU and NANGYO, discussing the meridian points from the aspect of KI, the central teaching is that the meridian points are the “windows of KI.”2) Relationship with the MeridiansUntil the present the meridian points have been related with the meridians and the front-back body theory. For example, the selection of GV-20 for the treatment of hemorrhoids, LI-4 for the treatment of facial carbuncles and BL-54 for the treatment of lumbago, has been explained by the induction and distant part function theories, however, ignoring the fact that these points exist on their specific meridians it becomes impossible to explain these functions. With an understanding of the meridian paths and the areas these control this explain is easily accomplished.3) Clinical ApproachAccepting the GOZORUPU concept as functional anatomy, the meridians as the physiological function of KI, the meridian points as the windows of KI, the acpuncture-moxibustion concepts as Oriental medicine, and applying these in the clinic it is possible to obtain most clinical results.More concretely using brushing acupuncture methods (TOHOKUKAI style) one of 9 types, tonification acupuncture at LV-8 for liver deficiency, at KI-7 for kidney defificiency, at SP-3 for spleen deficiency, major complaints are relieved or may disappear completely.I shall introduce a sample pattern and present my opinions.4) The Essence of the Meridian PointsTouching on in addition to the above the point selection theory and meridian characteristics I'd like to conclude that the essence of the meridian points is indeed their status as the windows of KI.
