In this paper,I will deal with Sir Philip Sidney's Astrophil, and Stella, and compare this sequence of sonnets with that of Shakespeare's. I will point out that one of the differences between these two collections of sonnets consists of the appearance and disappearance of Cupid, the God of Love. I will try to show how much importance the imagery of Cupid has for Sidney's poetry, because Cupid is one of the images deriving from Italian sonnets, especially Petrarch's. I have traced the origin of English sonnet sequences from Petrarch in a previous paper, and I'd like to place Sidney's sonnets definitely in that stream. The imagery of eyes is another important topic of my paper, and I will show some evidence of how that imagery is associated with Cupid in Sidney's sonnets. I will also try to solve the mystery of why Shakespeare did not use the imagery of Cupid in his sonnets. In passing, l will briefly indicate that there is a break in the theme of Cupid after sonnet 86 in Astrophil, and Stella, which can be explained as being the point at which there was a break in the writing of the sonnet sequence itself.
