It was often said that the movement towards Malaysia was dated from the Tunku Abdul Rahman's almost casual address in Singapore in 1961. Some scholars, however, insisted before the advocacy of the Malaysia Plan there were a British plan towards a nation-state in the British South-East Asia. This paper's aim is to clarify the origins of the Malaysia Plan, focusing on the rivalries among the Federation of Malaya, Singapore and Britain, by using some documents and memoirs which were recently released. In chapter I, we will review Britain's dominion plan and its frustration. In chapter II, we will see the rivalry between the Federation and the British on this issue. In concluding chapter, we will sum up this paper as follows, although the Federation had its plan for a new state, Singapore and the British also had their own but different motives for it and played pivotal roles towards the advocacy of Malaysia Plan.
