Recent advances in the biostratigraphic studies on the definition and zonation of the Cretaceous System in the stage stratotypes and relevant sequences in western Europe are reported and reviewed, showing a number of tables (Tables 1-13) cited or adapted from the representative results. Also the problemas to the definition of the stage boundaries is reviewed on the basis of the discussions at the Symposium in Copenhagen, October 1983, showing concisely the suggested proposal in Table 14. The definition of the stages, if firmly established, would indeed be a foundation for the international correlation, but we should consider the palaeogeographic, palaeoenvironmental and sedimentological factors to develop soundly the regional correlation. In this context some comments are given on the problem how to improve the correlation of the Cretaceous sequences of the Japanese provinceor North Pacific region with the international scale.
