The Ittenschule (1926-1934) was an art and design school established by Johannes Itten in Berlin. Among the instructors at the Ittenschule were painters Shounan Mizukoshi and Yumeji Takehisa and there were two students from the Jiyugakuen, Misses Mitsuko Yamamuro and Kazuko Sasagawa. Until now I have publicized some papers on the details of their activities at the Ittenschule and their acceptance in Japan. This presentation further clarifies how Itten's way of thinking in the art/design education and the activities of the Japanese people interrelated, including their mutual interchange and the circumstances in Berlin surrounding Itten in those days. The relationship between Itten's artistic thought in modern design and Japan is thus discussed.
