The development and study of Japanese Typography in Western countriesduring the 19th century profoundly influenced the subsequent development of Typography in Japan during the 19th and 20th centuries. In particular the Americal Presbyterian Mission Press (APMP) in China had a substantial influence and has left us an enormous amount of research material. About three years we visited the APMP and obtained photocopies of invaluable 19th century documents. We have organised our findings from this research into the following sections. 1 The background to William Gamble's resignation from the APMP 2 The relationship between William Gamble and the Japanese 3 The APMP at 135 North Szechuen Road in Shanghai and its location
