It has been acknowledged that William Gamble sucessfully developed modern letterpress printing using Chinese characters during his 11 year stay in China from 1858 to 1869. Gamble's work still forms a key part of contemporary Japanese & Chinese typography and printing. Through research of the Gamble Collection at the Library of Congress in U.S.A., it is possible to evaluate the development and standardization of Japanese type sizes, names and classifications. The latter sizes, names and classifications have been employed in the Japanese design and printing industries for over a century. Therefore the many ambiguous problems relevant to the early era of modern letterpress printing in Japan are addressed through this study.
