We tested 70 plant species collected in the central part of Japan for the presence of water extractable allelochemicals using a screening method based on Richards' function, fitted to lettuce seed germination and growth test. The parameters for the germination tests included, final germination percentage(A), germination rate(R), and the onset of germination(Ts). The plants with allelolopathic activities included, Solidago altissima. Artemisia princeps, Helianthus anuus. Pueraria lobata, Secale cereale, which were reported previously, in addition to, Mucuna prurience, Phytolacca americana, Houttuynia cordata. Colocasia esculenta known as oriental medicinal plants. The analysis based on RICHARDS' function revealed some of the mechanisms of action of these plant extracts, and the method was considered to be useful for the screening of plants with allelopathic properties.
