This study was designed to evaluate the number of bacteria in different ways of hand washing with the cooperation of total 345 nursing students of the first grade. The number of detected bacteria was compared in the following four cases. [1] Before washing hands; [2] After washing hands with water; [3] After washing hands with soap and water; [4] After washing hands with the antiseptic. The way to make a sample is to spread out the three fingers (the forefinger, the middle finger and the third finger) and rub them on the whole surface of solid agar medium. The results are as follows: the number of bacteria detected after washing hands with the water was larger than that before washing. In addition, after washing hands with soap the number of bacteria was much larger. Bacteria detected in these cases can be thought to be indigenous ones, and healthy people don't get infected with these bacteria. Some indigenous bacteria, however, can cause opportunistic infection. Therefore, for the persons who supply food for many people, for example, the food industry and a restaurant and the persons who are engaged in medical treatment, it is desirable to wash their hands with the disinfectant after washing with soap.
