The subject of this thesis is to give a close observation on her method and thought of literary expression. When reading through San Mao's works, the change or a kind of progress is recognized on her way of expression and the character of her thought at the turning point when she returned to Taiwan in year 1981. So, her creative activities should be divided into two periods. The earlier period is considered to be 4 years, from May 1976, the time when "the Stories of Sahara" was published, to February 1979 when "Gentle Nights" was published. There were 5 books written during this period, the most brilliant ones of her all. And that was the time of 6 years when she spent her life with her husband Jose. "I could not have written any of my books if Jose did not offer me the freedom, the confidence and the love." San Mao wrote. To her, the marriage life with Jose was the peak of her life. And she lived radiantly for herself then. The death of Jose changed her philosophy of life and her way of expression as well. In 1981, San Mao returned to Taiwan. And from then on to the time when she died, her creative activities is determined to be the later period. During this period there were the publications of "Falling Flowers in my Dream" -the memory to her husband, "Walking Over Mountains & Rivers" -the travel notes to Middle South America, "Words from my Heart" -the letters to the readers, "The Storm of the Fleeting World" - the script, and etc. And it was also the time that San Mao wrote for her readers and the world as a mature writer. Above all, the works of her earlier period and later period expressed two different philosophy of life. The observation was focused on the method of expression and thought while comparing her works of the 2 periods.
