The aim of this paper is to analyze the structure of sports news stories. Bell (1991) compares the narrative structure of the news stories in English with the narrative structure of personal experience analyzed by Labov & Waletzky (1967) and Labov (1972). In this paper, through the analysis of the narrative structure of English and Japanese newspapers, I will present the view that English and Japanese narratives are characterized as result-oriented and process-oriented, respectively.
