Little concern, from the point of view of rockglaciers, has been directed to the Japanese alpine geomorphology. In the present paper, significance of the viewpoint of rockglaciers in the Japanese alpine geomorphology is discussed on the basis of a brief review on recent studies of rockglaciers. Recent studies especially on morphological features have led to a remarkable progress in an understanding of rockglaciers, although genetic and dynamic aspects are much open to discussion, resulting in confusion and disparities on definition of rockglaciers. When examined from the viewpoint of morphological features, an aspect of rockglaciers, it is implied that some Japanese glacial and periglacial landforms which have been identified as moraines, protalus ramparts etc. might be misinterpreted. Re-examination of the Japanese alpine geomorphology, viewed from various aspects of rockglaciers, is necessary in further studies.
