It has often been criticized that Walt Disney's "They lived happily ever after" storiessuch as Sleeping Beauty and Snow White do not represent the real U.S. society. Inorder to wipe off this criticism, Walt Disney Pictures released Enchanted in whichGiselle the heroine is sent to New York City by evil Queen Narcissa from a fairytaleland, Andalasia where she was supposed to get married with Prince Edward to livehappily ever after. The movie appears to be a success because Walt Disney Picturesintroduces the traditional plots that they have valued for a long time and cleverlyintertwines them with the contemporary alternatives, or the facts of life, some ofwhich should have been mentioned in Disney's works in order to let children knowthat "living happily ever after" cannot always happen in our real lives. When Ichecked people's criticism on this successful movie in Japan and the U.S. written onthe internet, I found interesting differences in their comments and opinions in thesetwo countries. Why do these differences exist? How differently do people in thesetwo countries perceive "They lived happily ever after"? And why? In this paper, Iwill conduct a socio-cultural analysis on this Walt Disney movie, Enchanted, in order to answer these questions. 「ウォルト・ディズニーの『眠れる森の美女』や『白雪姫』等に見る『2人はその後幸せに暮らしました。』はアメリカの現実社会を適切に表していない。」とたびたび批評されてきたが、そのような批評を消し去る為に、ウォルト・ディズニーピクチャーズは『魔法にかけられて』を制作した。この映画では、ヒロインであるジゼルは悪女王ナリッサによっておとぎの国、アンダレージアから現代のニューヨークの町に送られてしまう。ゼジルはアンダレーシアで結婚して、エドワード王子と2人でその後幸せに暮らすはずであった。この映画は成功を収めたが、その理由はディズニーが長い間大切にしてきた伝統的なストーリーラインを、『魔法にかけられて』に盛り込みながらも、それを、ディズニーがもっと前に紹介すべきであった現代的な考え方、言い換えれば日常生活の現実と一緒に映画の中に組み込むことで、「2人はその後幸せに暮らしました。」は必ずしも実際の生活の中では起きるとは限らないと示唆したからである。この成功を果たした映画に対する日本とアメリカの人たちの映画批評をインターネットで読んだ時、国の違いで批評がかなり相違していることに気が付いた。なぜこのような相違が存在するのか。「2人はその後幸せに暮らしました。」は日本とアメリカでいかに相違して受け止められているか。そして、その理由は。私は、この論文でウォルト・ディズニー映画『魔法にかけられて』に関する社会文化的な分析を行い、これらの質問に答えていきたい。
