In Spanish the system of the demonstrative adjectives consists of three elements, este, ese and aquel, while in Italian it consists of two elements, questo and quello. We examine the syntactic distribution of these demonstrative adjectives in the corpus (a Spanish text and its Italian translation, an Italian text and its Spanish translation, and the Spanish and Italian translations of texts written in other languages), taking into account the distributional correspondence between them and the definite article. We observe a close connection between ese and questo, a distant relation between este and quello and a distant relation between aquel and questo, and conclude that these characteristics are caused by the person feature of each demonstrative adjective.
