The late Dr. Wiesław Kota´nski (1915-2005) at Warsaw University studied the Kojiki during his lifetime. This paper is a free translation from the fragment of his main work entitled Dziedzictwo Japon´skich Bogów (Heritage Kept in the Japanese Deities). He insisted that the messages for a better life even in the modern world, which are left in the Kojiki, could be found by analyzing the epithets of the deities appearing in the Kojiki. In his book he analyzes the words Takamagafara and 'Amanominakanusi-no-kami found in the first verse. Usually Takamagafara is understood as the wide field in the high heaven, but he interpreted the meaning of this name as the place of Chaos from which everything in the universe comes. This interpretation is quite different from generally accepted understanding. As in the case of Takamagafara, his interpretation of 'Amanominakanusi-no-kami is also unique. It is usually understood as the master in the center of heaven, but he understands this deity in the beginning of the Kojiki as the master with power of life giving and of diffusing and encouraging its power and activity.
