ルネ・ジラールが、人間の「三角形の欲望」(「模倣の欲望」)について世人の注目をひいたのは『欲望の現象学』(1)においてであった。彼はセルバンテス、スタンダール、フローベール、プルースト、シェイク スピアなどの文学作品に現れたこの欲望の様々な例を指摘し、作品や、人間性の理解に大きく貢献した。この小論では、アメリカ文学史上有名な女性の主人公の欲望を、この視点から見つめることで作品の読み を深めたいと思う。René Girard pointed out that human desire is mimetic and that great writers such as Dostoevsky, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Flaubert and Stendhal described the mimetic desire in their master pieces. I have found that the heroine of Margaret Mitchel's novel"Gone with the Wind"has something similar to that kind of desire, though not exactly what Girard called"mimetic desire."In this paper, I have tried to grasp the nature of the heroine's desire with the aid of Girard's theory.
