Single-walled carbon nanotubes have inherently large surface areas. The surfaces are real surfaces not like apparent ones of activated carbon. Use of the surfaces is my interest. Starting with a brief introduction of earlier studies of carbon nanotube structures, I will present hybrid structures of fullerene and single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), and synthesis and structures of double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNTs). Lastly single-wall carbon "nanohorns" (SWNHs), generated by CO<SUB>2</SUB> laser ablation of a carbon rod, will be introduced in terms of showing gas adsorption properties, their molecular selectivity including protein molecules, and an application to hydrogen fuel cell.
