パターン・マッチング技術を利用する新しい図書館システムを提案した。図書を適当なサイズ(例えば100?200冊)のブロックに分け、背表紙にカラーコードのラベルを張ってこのブロックへの所属を表す。ブロックは同一の書架にまとめて置くが、ブロックの書庫内での配置、ブロック内での各図書の配置は任意である。ワークステーションによって制御されるビデオカメラで各書架の画像を得、カラーラベルと前もって作成してある画像目録を用いて、システムは常時、各図書の位置を把握している。利用者の検索に対して、書庫内での所属ブロックの位置が知らせるばかりでなく、書架に設置してある位置マーカがグループ内での求める位置を指示する。A new library system using pattern matching technology is proposed. Books in the library are classified into blocks of 100-200 each. A color-coded label on the back of a book specifies the block it belongs to. The arrangment of blocks in the library as well as that of books in a block can be arbitrary. Video cameras controlled by workstations monitor all the shelves. The image of each book is obtained and matched with the "image catalog" to identify the book. The system thus knows the position of each book in the library. The user may be directed to the book by a marker light attached to the shelf.
