Czeslaw Milosz's essay "Dostoevsky and Swedenborg" in his book "Emperor of the Earth" (Univ. of California P. 1977) interests us in the following two points: 1) the essay has made it sufficiently clear that Dostoevsky as a religious thinker had "the so-called scientific Weltanschaung". This fact helps us to understand without embarrassment Dostoevsky's materialistic reasoning as to the theological problems such as "Resurrection" or "the Other World". 2) C. Milosz finds Gnostic way of thinking in Dostoevsky's Christology, which can be tracted back through Saint-Simon and Fourier to Swedenborg. Here also, we feel, Milosz has shown a keen historical insight into the somewhat heretical Christology of Dostoevsky.
