Even within a University Press list, for example, there are wide variations not only in the quantities sold of different books but in their patterns of sale. It is therefore worthwhile to study the patterns for books with a trade discount and those with a short discount, for books at different prices, for hardbacks and paperbacks, and for books in various fields of knowledge (literary criticism, political science, physics, biology, etc.) to see whether there are significant consistencies and differences that can be anticipated in estimating the market and determining print orders. We keep coming back to the demand curve, the publisher's estimate of how many copies can be sold in a given time at a given price—in short, his estimate of the market. But it should be remembered that the book market is not homogeneous; it is a cluster of different markets for different books at different prices, to be reached in different ways.Publishing is changing rapidly today, and the publisher who adds to his instinct and experience an element of fresh analysis is more likely to be able to make decisions that will produce the desired results. The analytic result is shown in eleven figures and six tables.
