2018年度後学期に英語教育課程の授業でデザイン思考を用いた地域貢献型の授業を行った。本学の学生がキャンパス近隣に住む、日本語や国際ビジネスを勉強するアジアからの留学生に日本語または英語でインタビュー活動を行い、彼らのニーズを聞き取り、問題解決方法を決定し、成果物を実作して留学生からのフィードバックを得た。参加学生がインタビュー活動を通して外国人学生に共感することができたかを明らかにするため、筆者らは参加学生を対象に半構造インタビューを行い、インタビュー活動とプロジェクト活動について振り返った発話を収集し、テーマティック分析を用いて検証した。得られたテーマからは、相手に共感をするには、言語にかかわらずインタビュースキルを持つことが重要であり、参加学生は共感のインタビューを通して、自分の問題と置き換えて問題解決方法を決定し、自分の経験や知識を使って留学生の問題を理解しようとしていることがわかった。;This paper reports the results of a community-based project conducted by students of English Seminar I which was offered in the fall term of 2018. The students, following the Design Thinking method, interviewed foreignerstudentsfrom Asian countries residingnear the KIT campus regarding their life in Japan and everyday problemsthey experience. The Japanese students then defined the foreign students' needs, discussed the possible solutions,and created products to idealize the solutions. They received feedback from the foreign students to further elaborate and revise their products. In order to clarify how the Japanese students empathized with the foreigners during the Design Thinking process, the researchers conducted semi-structured interviews and asked how they empathized with the foreignstudents and how their empathizing activity led them to the solution. The responses were analyzed using a method of thematic analysis. The obtained themes indicate that interview skills, regardless oflanguage they use, is essential in empathizing. It wasalso found out that the participating students decided on the solution citing their own problems and experiences.
