The purpose of this paper is to describe the common errors of the Japanese learners of English in their essay writings and to consider the background of those errors from a cognitive linguistic perspective. In this paper, we take typical errors of a possessive verb ‘have’ in English for example, and argue that those errors may be caused by the lack of the learners’ knowledge that the cognitive process of English is quite different from that of Japanese. In conclusion, we suggest that the cognitive linguistic approach can give the positive contribution to the teaching and learning English as a foreign language.
