Oze district is located in Nikko National Park in Central Honshu. The region studied is a 50×50m patch at an altitude of 1,670m near Lake Oze and is covered by a dense forest of Abies mariessi with a thick growth of Sasa oseana. Collecting was carried out during August 14-26, 1962, May 26 to June 4, 1963, and August 24-27, 1963, using one hundred snap traps (about 2,500 trap-nights). From these investigations, 11 species of insectivores and rodents were collected, including 6 species which had naver before been collected in the Oze district. The numbers of specimens collected and their percentages are shown in Table 1. The following observations seem especially noteworthy: 1) Glirulus japonicus (Japanese dormouse) is usually believed to be arboreal and no cases of capture by earth -surface traps had been reported. In this investigation, however, four specimens were trapped in mole galleries. It follows therefore that this species utilizes underground galleries during these periods at least. 2) Althouge Dymecodon pilirostris (Furry snouted shrew-mole) and Urotrichus talpoides (Japanese shrew-mole) have been reported to be allopatric (Tokuda, 1953, 1954), this area yielded both species.
