Economic historians must always pay much attention to the first-hand materials or primary sources. These are basically documents of the contemporary people : diaries, account books of merchants, and notes of rent collections by landlords. As an economic demographer of Tokugawa period, I have been heavily involved in reading the Shumon-ninbetsu-cho, or the ledgers of religious denominations of villagers of each village. These ledgers had been compiled by lower bureaucracies annually and kept well. By comparing the data of a certain year's document with another year's, you can surmise and finally determine the local transformations of population. According to my investigation of Takayama district of Hida prefecture, I concluded that the poor people there did not belong to those who had more children than richer ones.佐々木陽一郎先生退官記念号Collected Papers on the Occasion of the Retirement of Professor Yoichiro Sasaki
