A. This is one of the famous historical typeface. I studied according to the original punch seals of steel. At the beginning of Meiji era, on 1871, Tokyo-nichi-nichi newspaper imported the lead type from American Missionary Press in Shanghai (China). This was MINCHO style (somewhat mechanized design, developed in Woodcut, and was not popular for the people). 10 years after, the same newspaper exchanged the body type style into this KODOKEN style. The people welcomed this style, because 1) the size became 20% larger in each square side, and 2) the style was the traditional manuscript Kaisho style. 10 years after, again MINCHO style occupied the main position of Japanese body type, and continuously developed into the present stage. The KODOKEN style is used in the name card, until the second war, because it can express the humanistic character. B. Not only to describe this typeface-style, but also I tried to generalize the problems as follow; (1) The system of type size of this KODOKEN type is very special. I traced the historical development of Japanese system of size, from Shanghai to the present JIS System, through KODOKEN type. (2) I indicated many important factors, which decide the typeface-style and tried to express the factors of quality by the numerals. These methods maybe useful to analyze them and we can compare efficiently one style with another.
