In Japan, there are about 40 preserved ships, which are historical as training sailing ships, passenger-cargo ships, battle ships and etc. But, there are many tasks for preserving these ships. At some preserved historical ship, many damages at hull, deck, house an deck fittings have been appeared. The purpose of this study is definition of the most suitable maintenance method for such ships. The process of the study is as followed. (1)Make the current list of the preserved and reconstructed ships in Japan. (2)Onsite reserach for 17 ships in the above list. (3)Detailed research for training sailing ships "Kaiwo maru", which has been done good maintenance by some professional seaman.
