Fundamental organometallic reactions such as dissociative and associative ligand exchange processes, oxidative addition and reductive elimination are described. Importance of both steric and electronic effects of ligands on kinetic and thermodynamic stability of the metal-ligand bond is shown. Formality, mechanistic aspects, and trends of oxidative addition and reductive elimination involving bond cleavage and formation at transition metals are also described as important fundamental organometallic reactions.

Homogeneous catalysis promoted by transition metal complexes such as hydrometallation, carbonylation, Wacker oxidation, oxidative coupling reaction are described. Mechanistic aspects of these catalytic reactions are discussed on the basis of the fundamental reaction patterns of organotransiton metal complexes such as ligand dissociation and association, oxidative addition and reductive elimination, insertion and elimination, and reactions of the coordinated substrates.

Fundamental minimum basic ideas for understanding structure and chemical bond of organotransition metal compounds as well as mechanisms of transition metal promoted catalyses and organic chemical transformations including bonding concepts, orbital hybridization, electron-deficient bond, back-donation, 18-electron rule, coordinative unsaturation, crystal field theory, fluxionality, nomenclature are described.

Homogeneous catalyses promoted by transition metal complexes such as cross coupling reaction, Mizoroki-Heck reaction, Tsuji-Trost allylation reaction,functionalization of C-H bond, Sharpless oxidation reaction, and some recent topics related to organotransition metal complexes are described. Mechanistic aspects of these reactions are also discussed based on the fundamental reaction patterns of organotransiton metal complexes. Future perspectives of organotransition metal catalyzed reactions are also described.
