The goal of the National Colleges of Technology is to cultivate engineers who can take an active role in the global society. To meet this goal, various opportunities to take part in international events, conferences and internships are offered, but only a small number of students make use of these opportunities. While engineers represent a segment of society which is very likely to require English in their place of work, students of National Colleges of Technology are sometimes thought to be under-motivated to learn English. This article presents instructional ideas to enhance students’ long term intrinsic motivation at National Colleges of Technology. Emphasis is placed on the importance of cooperation between English teachers and teachers of other specialties, as well as the involvement of students who have participated in international activities. It is suggested that students who have benefited from international exchanges as well as graduates who have used English in their place of work can be promoted as positive role models to increase the motivation of all students.
