The goal of the National Colleges of Technology is to cultivate engineers who can take an active role in the global society. To meet this goal, various opportunities to take part in international events, conferences and internships are offered, but only a small number of students make use of these opportunities. While engineers represent a segment of society which is very likely to require English in their place of work, students of National Colleges of Technology are sometimes thought to be under-motivated to learn English. This article presents instructional ideas to enhance students’ long term intrinsic motivation at National Colleges of Technology. Emphasis is placed on the importance of cooperation between English teachers and teachers of other specialties, as well as the involvement of students who have participated in international activities. It is suggested that students who have benefited from international exchanges as well as graduates who have used English in their place of work can be promoted as positive role models to increase the motivation of all students.

This study attempts to construct a WTC (Willingness to Communicate) scale with high content validity and internal consistent reliability, based on 41 WTC questionnaire items developed by Sick and Nakasaka (2000). Six hundred twenty-four public high school students in Kochi city were given Sick & Nakasaka's questionnaire. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis revealed that 13 out of 41 items were acceptable variables to be included in the scale and that they could be grouped into two factors: Factor 1 "a situation where a real English user is assumed" and Factor 2 "a situation where the English use in the classroom is assumed." This new two-factor scale will make a substantial contribution to WTC research in the future.

A number of years have passed since the school education in Finland came to attract a lot of attention from people engaged in school education throughout the world due to her 15-year-old pupils’ successful performance in PISA organised and conducted by OECD every three years since 2000. Since it is not targeted in PISA, English language education in Finland has not attracted much attention but it is noteworthy that Finland has been highly successful in English language education as well, as is reflected in the results of TOEFL, which nowadays functions as a sort of international index of English language proficiency. In order to find the reason for this success, a number of studies have been conducted by the present researcher. The present study focuses on English learners’ perceptions about English and English language learning and teaching, and reports the results of the questionnaire studies which were carried out to compare the results between Finnish and Japanese upper secondary school pupils with a view to offering implications for the reform of English language education in Japan.

This paper reports on English writing lessons on a machine translation application. Currently, many students tend to use machine translation for completing their English writing assignments. It is difficult for them to revise the English composition output from machine translation engines due to their low proficiency level. Consequently, the completed assignments submitted by the students are sometimes difficult to understand or are unreadable. Students who belong to National Institute of Technology, Kagawa College, Takuma Campus (aged from 15 to 18 years old) are taught how to modify their original Japanese text so that machine translation engines can output more readable English translations. The use of machine translation reduced the students’ anxiety about writing in English, and consequently, their writing performance was qualitatively and quantitatively improved. The results of writing scores in GTEC tests support that this approach was to some extent effective.

Although Natsume Soseki is better known as a novelist, his career began as an English teacher at middle schools and high schools, and also as a teacher of English literature at the Imperial University. This paper investigates Natsume Soseki's teaching career and his ideas on ELT at middle school level, specially focusing on his days at Ehime Prefectural Lower Middle School, later renamed Matsuyama Middle School, and also known as the setting of his novel Botchan.
