This paper deals with estimations and experiments on the lateral forces imposed on the turnout curve by 2-10-4 type locomotive. These estimations and experiments show that(a) the pony truck (when the locomotive is running forwards) or the bogie truck (when running backwards) takes the extreme position of its side play, (b) the flange of the leading wheel is in contact with the outer rail of the turnout curve and the great lateral force acts on the rail head, (c) when running forwards, the wheel load of the pony truck on the inner rail is reduced by the lateral force, and the wheel is in risk of derailment when it runs against guard rail of the turnout, (d) when running backwards, the leading wheel of the bogie truck is in risk of derailment by rolling over the outer rail of the turnout curve, (e) the flange of the driving wheel near the centre of friction is in contact with the inner rail and the great lateral force is imposed on the rail.
