The relation between acoustic characteristics of the vowel and maxillofacial morphology was studied in 100 Japanese female malocclusion patients with the mean age of 24 years. The frequencies of the first formant (FD and second formant (F2) of the five Japanese vowel sounds (/a/,/i/,/u/,/e/and/o/) were analyzed by using linear predictive coding, and 18 skeletal parameters were measured on lateral cephalograms. From correlation analyses between F1, F2-F1 and 18 parameters, F1 of the /i/ statistically showed significant positive correlation with the mandibular plane angle and the Y-Axis, whereas the F2-F1 of the /i/ showed negative correlation with the angle of convexity, the mandibular plane angle, the Y-Axis, N-M distance, and the ANS-M distance. No significant correlation was found in the other vowel sounds. These results suggested that the uttering /i/ sound can be easily influenced by the mandibuluar vertical and horizontal positions because its articulation point is placed at the most anterior and superior site among the five Japanese vowels.
