In this study, we propose a method of the detection of a hand region in real time. Now, most people have the opportunity to easily utilize a computer. However, some skills are required to operate the devices that we call a mouse and keyboard, the interface between a human being and a computer. Therefore a direct, more natural manmachine interface is demanded. Gesture recognition is an effective technique in conveying a message from a person to a computer. Therefore, we used an image processing technique so that a computer recognized hand movement. And the recognized hand movement is connected directly with the operation of a computer. By using MATLAB we developed software for hand region detection, classification of hand movement and computer operation. And by using FPGA we developed hardware that took an image in with a camera in real time. Results show that fourteen in twenty-one video images are able to detect hand movement. However, it is necessary to test it in a condition of the colors of many skins and a condition of background colors except blue.
