The brain waves of 16 cases of fetuses obtained by artificial abortion and 2 cases of premature children at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Hokkaido University have been examined. The results are as follows: 1) The brain waves in all cases of fetuses and premature children from 3. to 9. month of pregnancy were recorded. The brain waves were very irregular slow waves of a period. 0.2-2 sec. and ampl. 10-90μV superposed by relatively regular frequent ones of period. 50 msec. and ampl. 5μV. 2) The brain waves of fetuses react to some chemicals administered, such as Evipan Sodium, Sodium amytal and Methylpropamine, similar to those of adults. From this fact it can be imagined that fetuses living in ovisacs are not entirely unconcious but are able to some extent to react to some chemicals.
