Inland waterway tourism in Europe has been nowadays developing from the 50s of the former century, inheriting the developed waterway transportation system. This paper aims to give an overview of this tourism, especially in France. The inland waterway tourism in France is based on three dimensions : "blue", "green" and "gray" At first, the blue dimension is the most basic element of this type of tourism, which is repesented by river cruise and leisure navigation in inland waterways. Then "green" dimension is concerned with the rural tourism practiced near the waterways. At last "gray" dimension represents the urban areas where waterways flow. These three dimensions constitute so called "le tourisme fluvial" in a wide sense. And this synthetic type of tourism can contribute to the regional development. The government and local governments are trying to promote this tourism.
