High power negative-ion sources and related technologies regarding neutral beam injection (NBI) system for plasma core heating and NBI current drive in a high density and reactor-grade large size plasma have progressed conspicuously, and a few hundreds keV- class negative-ion based NBI comes into a step of practical use. The 500keV negative-ion based NBI system for JT-60 at JAERI has completed in March 1996 and is increasing the beam power injected into the JT-60 plasma. Additionally the 180keV system for LHD at NIFS is under construction aiming at the completion in 1998. Furthermore, the R&D works of the MeV class negative-ion source and accelerator for ITER are also being progressed, and a high power NBI with MeV class beam energy has become realistic.
