Schelling argued that there is another way of cognition: the way of understanding quod sit(daß ein Seiendes ist). This is not a way of understanding that uses our reason, but rather a way of understanding that uses Existenz. Reason can only give us what things are, but it cannot teach us why things are there at all. Existenz in Schelling means the result of realizing God from the world of Nichtwissen. Schelling thought substantial principles of mythology can give reality to supernatural principles of revelation, so long as revelation can overcome myth’s tendency towards brute force.
