The genus Riccardoella Berlese, 1923 (Ereynetidae Oudemans, 1931) consists of eight species, and six of the eight species were reported and described from the lungs of terrestrial mollusks, and the remaining two were from soils. In Japan, three of the eight species have widely been reported from terrestrial mollusks. In this manuscript, we introduce species identification based on morphology, distribution, and hosts of these three Japanese mite species. Sampling methods, preparations of slide specimens and virulence of these mites were also added.

From 2018 to 2021, land snail surveys were carried out from Okinawa to Hokkaido, Japan to find metacercariae of the trematode genus Brachylaima. When metacercariae were obtained from land snails, their morphologies were recorded and partial sequences of mitochondrial DNA (cox1) and nuclear 28S rDNA were determined for DNA barcoding. As a p-distance value of less than 1.8% was considered to be intraspecific variation for cox1 (630 bp) based on the sequences of known species of this genus, the metacercariae obtained in this study were discriminated into five putative species. Two of the five putative species were molecularly identified to two known species, B. lignieuhadrae and B. phaedusae, respectively, whereas the remaining three were treated as unidentified species. It is unknown whether the unidentified metacercariae were larvae of known species without genetic information or new species. Morphological and molecular comparisons of adults are necessary for the taxonomic clarification of these unidentified metacercariae.

From 2012 to 2021, bird surveys were carried out from Kyushu to Hokkaido, Japan, including a zoo, to find feather mites (Analgoidea Trouessart & Mégnin, 1884 and Pterolichoidea Gaud & Atyeo, 1978) from raptors including owls. In this study, we detected eight feather mite species as following: Glaucalges tytonis Dabert, Ehrnsberger & Dabert, 2008, Hieracolichus nisi (Canestrini, 1878), Kramerella bubonis (Lönnfors, 1937), Kramerella aprotuberantia Dubinin, 1953, Dermonoton longiventer (Mégnin & Trouessart, 1884), Petitota aluconis (Buchholz, 1869), Pseudalloptinus aquilinus (Trouessart, 1884) and Pseudalloptinus milvulinus (Trouessart, 1884).Two of the mite species, G. tytonis and Ps. aquilinus, were only sampled from bird hosts born in the zoo of Japan but they probably originated from oversea. The five of the eight species, Hi. nisi, K. bubonis, K. aprotuberantia, D. longiventer and Pe. aluconis were first reported in Japan. Among them, Hi. nisi was detected only from endangered bird host species Aquila chrysaetos (Linnaeus, 1758)(EN: Endangered). For the mite species, it is important to examine the status of their populations to consider the extinction risk in Japan, because they may be threatened with extinction simultaneously with the decline of the host populations in the future. Three species of mites, G. tytonis, D. longiventer, Hi. nisi were first reported from the hosts Bubo bubo (Linnaeus, 1758), Strix uralensis Pallas, 1771, Haliaeetus albicilla (Linnaeus, 1758), respectively. The Ps. milvulinus was also the first reported from the hosts Buteo japonicus Temminck & Schlegel, 1844 and A. chrysaetos.

The dicrocoeliid trematode Lutztrema attenuatum (Dujardin, 1845) has been reported from its definitive hosts, passerine birds worldwide, whereas its larvae have never been detected in natural fields. In this study, 41 adults of Lu. attenuatum were obtained from dead specimens of Turdus pallidus Gmelin, 1789 and T. eunomus Temminck, 1831, and the partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene and nuclear 28S rDNA were determined from one of the specimens as DNA barcodes. Furthermore, during a land snail survey in Tokyo, Japan on 11 August 2021, dicrocoeliid sporocysts and cercariae were detected from the achatinid Allopeas satsumense (Pilsbry, 1906). The partial COI sequence of the sporocysts showed a p-distance value of less than 1.4% to that of the adult Lu. attenuatum. The sporocyst was identified molecularly as Lu. attenuatum based on an empirical intraspecific genetic variation in dicrocoeliids, and thus A. satsumense found to be its first intermediate host. We also provided DNA barcodes to an adult specimen of Lyperosomum sp. (Dicrocoeliidae) detected from the same dead specimen of T. pallidus.

We report parasitic mites from six species of land snails, which are listed in Prefectural Red Lists and/or Red Data Books authorized by Ministry of the Environment Government of Japan and Prefectural Governments in Japan; Riccardoella reaumuri Fain and van Goethem, 1986 were found from Euhadra brandtii sapporo Ijima, 1891 in Hokkaido, Oxyloma hirasei Pilsbry, 1901 in Ibaraki, and Phaeohelix submandarina Pilsbry, 1890 in Kagoshima. Riccardoella tokyoensis Waki and Shimano, 2018 were sampled from Tauphaedusa tau Boettger, 1877 in Ibaraki, Megalophaedusa surugensis Kuroda, 1936 in Kanagawa, and Megalophaedusa yagurai Kuroda, 1936 in Tokyo. Extinction risks of the two mites should be low because they are found in land snails which are currently common and do not appear in any categories of Red List and Red Data Book.

Nematodes of the genus Phasmarhabditis Andrássy, 1976 (Secernentea: Rhabditida: Rhabditidae) are terrestrial gastropod parasites and mainly target land slugs. In this study, land slugs were surveyed at 14 locations in seven prefectures of Honshu Island, Japan, to determine Phasmarhabditis spp. infection. Juvenile nematodes of unknown species were found in Meghimatium bilineatum Benson, 1842, at five of the 14 locations. The prevalence and mean intensities ranged from 4.5% to 93.3% and from 4.7 to 22.5 nematodes per host, respectively. A total of 881 juveniles were incubated with slug tissues for 2–10 days, and subsequently developed into adult stage showing the diagnostic characteristics of Phasmarhabditis spp. No nematodes were found from slugs of the genus Lehmannia sampled where M. bilineatum were infected, indicating a difference among host species in their sensitivity to the nematodes. Twenty M. bilineatum from Meguro in Tokyo, Japan, where the prevalence in the host population was >90%, were maintained under laboratory conditions. After 23 days, 11 of the 20 slugs died and the cadavers were infected with numerous nematodes. Since three species of Phasmarhabditis nematodes are known to be lethal to terrestrial gastropods, the nematodes we sampled possibly have a lethal effect on the host slugs.

CENTRAIR, the nickname of Central Japan International Airport, is under construction in the sea off Tokoname City, Aichi prefecture. It will open in March 2005, then will be a major air-hub in global network as a gateway of Japan. CENTRAIR is located 35km south of downtown Nagoya and the access time to that is 30 to 40 minutes by rail or car.In order to construct and operate CENTRAIR, Central Japan International Airport Co., Ltd. was designated as a commissioning entity by Japanese government.CENTRAIR is on a man-made island. Dredged soil from Nagoya port is unloaded by compressed air to the north part of the island. This system, “Pneumatic Flow Mixing Method”, enable us to prepare a certain strong ground in a short period, through the mixing and kneading of the soil and cement slurry in a pipeline.
