A retrospective study was performed on intermittent exotropia patients who received surgery at our clinic between Oct. 1979 and Nov. 1987.A total of 544 patients were divided into 4 groups according to their age at the time of surgery: 0-5yrs., 6-12yrs., 13-18yrs., and 19yrs. and older. It was found that prior to surgery the 19yrs. and older group had the highest percentage of large exodeviation, poor convergence, and absence of simultaneous perception as tested with the major amblyoscope. However, the corrective effect of uniocular resection-reccession was greatest in this groupe, and the rate of recurrence was lowest.
