This is an essay on the methodology and practical process of the research work in the field of engineering science. In this paper, firstly the philosophy and concept of scientific research is discussed. Secondly, the author describes the present procedure of the publishing of research papers in the journal of some academic or professional societies, as well as the review system which is indispensable for certification of the academic quality of research papers. Thirdly, some processes of study and academic training from the graduate student up to the professional researcher are concretely explained.Furthermore, the author indicates the important role of technical abilities of each researcher, which include mathematical analysis and designing of experimental equipments applied for the research works.Next, the author describes the practical process of research works, which starts from the search and decision of research theme, through the evaluation of its expected contributions as well as possibility of success, the theoretical analysis and/or experimental work on the decided research theme, and the examination of test results or the verification of test run of theoretical analysis, attains to the publishing of results of the research work.Finally, the process and measure of evaluation of the quality of research papers are discussed from academic and industrial points of view, and some features of the excellent research paper are described.

In this paper, the fatigue failure of some rocks under the repeated compressive load is discussed from the point of view that the fatigue failure is a stochastic process. Using a graphical method in which the logarithms of the probability of survival are plotted against the fatigue lives, it is revealed that the probability of survival is represented with the sum of two expotential functions, i. e.p=ξ1·exp (-λ1·N) +ξ2·exp (-λ2·N) where p: the probability of survivalξi: the probability that the failure of test piece occurs by the fracture mechamism with the rate constamtλi N: the number of loading cyclesThis result means that the fatigue failure of rocks consists of two exclusive Poisson's processes of 1st order, each of which would correspond to the inter- and innergranular fracture of the mineral particles constituting the rock.In order to obtain the S-N curve, the effect of the stress amplitude on the rate constant of the fatigue failure is investigated. A series of experiments is carried out at a constant minimum load and several levels of maximum loads.Finnally, it is indicated that the loading frequency has a little effect on the fatigue life of the rock.

In This paper, the author tries to discuss on the development and finiteness of natural resources on the basis of the present state of their supply and demand.<BR>The natural resources are classified into several categories i.e. mineral resource as solid raw materials, fossil fuels, nuclear power and new natural resource of energy.<BR>The finiteness and exhaustion of natural resources are one of the most important problems, in near future, because they are indispensable for production of various industrial materials as well as fuel of power plants, industrial plants, transport facilities, and home use.<BR>Then, the effect of increasing concentration of CO<SUB>2</SUB> on the global warming is critically discussed from scientific and long term point of view. Furthermore, it is indicated that the nuclear power is one of the most important energy resources in the future, although there remain some severe technical problems to be solved, at present. Next, the author discuss on the technical features and possibilities of such new natural energy resources as solar panel, wind power plant, geothermal energy, etc.<BR>And, the features of various storage facilities of electric power are discussed from technical and ecological point of view, because most of new natural energy are transformed into electric power for transmission and tentative storage.<BR>Finally, the author indicates that is most important to discuss on the interaction amongst new natural energy, mineral resources, and global environment from scientific and long term point of view.
