Japanese supercomputers, which are almost vector processing type, have kept the position of the highest performance since 1983 when the first supercomputer shipped. Vector computers have the capability of easy-to-use for programming, but can not extensively increase the effective performance more than present level due to the limitation of memory throughput. The expected maximum performance of vector type will be up to 100GFLOPS. Therefore, Japanese supercomputer makers will adopt the parallel processing type for next generation supercomputers. 1TFLOPS at the effective level of performance will be realized by the end of this century.
