Traditionally Hegel's educational theory was generally interpreted as a nationalistic pedagogy because it was considered on the basis of his work dealing with national sociology, i. e. The Philosophy of Law. On the contrary, in this paper we would like to bring out a different viewpoint which is not solved in his national educational theory, but based on his Phänomenologie des Geistes. The reason is that the self-formation of man is the theme of the Phenomenology, while the problem of the state there remains in the background. More in detail, we investigate the educational meaning of 'training in obedience' dealt with in the chapter 'dominion and servitude' ('Herrschaft und Knechtschaft'). According to Hegel, only through 'exercise in obedience' is the child enabled to form his own self with his own spontaneous will. If it is true that the essence of education does not consist merely in acquiring knowledge or developing skills, but rather in fostering in children the will to form themselves, it may be said that this 'training in obedience' is of great educational importance.
