Sintered metal is widely applied to mechanical parts and also to gears in special use. Bending strength and surface durability of sintered metal gears are, however, hardly discussed. Therefore, the authors carry out this test for the purpose of comparing bending strength and surface durability of sintered metal gears with those of hobbed carbon steel or cast iron gears.The test results make it clear that sintered metal gears have remarkably good characteristics on surface durability especially in the case of insufficient lubrication and its operating noise is smaller, although static and fatigue bending strength of sintered metal gears are lower than those of cast iron gears.
