In freshwater tropical fish aquariums, several species of bryophytes are used for decorative purposes as well as for egg laying substrates. Taxiphyllum barbieri, which is often erroneously called as "willow moss" in Japan, is found growing vigorously in many aquariums - and this species was also seen in an aquarium in New York. The species was originally described from Vietnam, and probably brought to Japan and other countries from Southeast Asia. Some other bryophytes used for the same purpose in aquariums in Japan are Fontinalis antipyretica, Riccia fluitans and Ricciocarpus natans. Amblystegium riparium, Vesicularia ferriei, Rhacopilum aristatum, Chiloscyphus polyanthos, Rhynchostegium riparioides, etc. were found growing in one of the large aquariums in Japan.
