The English vocabulary includes a large number of doublets, which are defined as the words that are cognates but are different in forms and/or in current meanings. Even though they were derived from the same origin, they often entered English via other languages which changed or modified not only their original forms but meanings. This paper aims to clarify how the doublets were differentiated in their meanings and to categorize them by the classification of change of meanings presented by Stephen Ullmann. It concludes that in English doublets the transfers of names through similarity between the senses are more than the ones through contiguity between them.
