Fluorescent substances are used in a wide range of applications, and the method that effectively design molecules having desirable absorption and emission wavelength is required. In this study, we used boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) compounds as a case study, and constructed high precision wavelength prediction model using ensemble learning. Prediction accuracy improved in stacking model using RDKit descriptors and Morgan fingerprint. The variables related to the molecular skeleton and the conjugation length were shown to be important. We also proposed an applicability domain (AD) estimation model that directly use the descriptors based on Tanimoto distance. The performance of the AD models was shown better than the OCSVM-based model. Using our proposed stacking model and AD model, newly generated compounds were screened and we obtained 602 compounds which were estimated inside the AD in both absorption wavelength and emission wavelength.

Chromosomal studies in peripheral lymphocytes from 63 residents near the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, at ages of 52-63 years old, were performed in 2001-2002. A higher rate of chromosome aberrations was observed in the two contaminated villages, Dolon and Sarjal, compared with the control village, Kokpekti. Moreover, a relationship of frequency of cells with radiation induced chromosome aberrations and the previously estimated exposure dose was observed. Furthermore, apparent nuclear abnormalities (ANA) of thyroid follicular cells were studied in 30 out of 63 residents, who were examined for chromosome aberrations. A higher rate of ANA was also found in the residents in the exposed villages compared with those in the control village. These results suggest radiation effects both on the chromosomes in peripheral lymphocytes and on the follicular cells in the thyroid.

Because of rapid population aging, it is necessary to design interfaces that can decrease cognitive workload. The design implications and evaluation criteria for creating such senior-friendly or disability-friendly interfaces need to be established. One element related to memory function that can be manipulated in an interface is visuospatial working memory. However, there are few reports regarding the relationship between visuospatial working memory volume and age. In this paper, we aim to clarify how visuospatial working memory volume changes across the lifespan. We implemented a gamified application named VisuoSpats, which is based on the visual pattern span test, to measure visuospatial memory. The introduced gamification elements included points, leaderboards, and feedbacks. Three hundred and sixty-nine individuals aged 2 to 92 years old participated in this study. The results indicate that the median number of cells memorized was 7.0 (interquartile range: 5.0-9.0) across all age groups. Moreover, the number of cells memorized tends to increase as age increases until the age range of 21-25 years, and then decreases gradually with increasing age. Based on the comments by teenagers or seniors, the effective gamification elements of VisuoSpats could be competition elements such as points and ranking, or diagnostic factors, respectively.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry of teeth is used extensively for dose estimation following exposure to radiation. The population inhabiting the northeast region of India is prone to different cancers of the head and neck, and their prevalence is several times the national average. The objective of this study was to determine the role of radiation in the causation of this high cancer incidence by performing ESR spectroscopic measurements of tooth samples collected from the general population living in and around the city of Silchar. Nineteen tooth samples were used, and the age of the patients was 13-60 years. The excess dose, determined by subtraction of the natural background dose from the dose absorbed by the enamel, was found to the extent of 123 ± 43 mGy. However, the individual excess dose was found to be higher in subjects who consumed lime (5/6) than in non-lime-consuming subjects (2/13). It is not entirely clear if radiation is the cause of this excess cancer in this region of India. Therefore there is a need for wider studies including consideration of tobacco consumption as well as a larger number of samples for tooth enamel dosimetry.
