Objective It is recommended that middle-aged and elderly individuals reduce their salt intake because of the high prevalence of hypertension. The consumption of miso soup is associated with salt intake, and the reduced consumption of miso soup has been recommended. Recent studies have demonstrated that the consumption of miso soup can attenuate an autonomic imbalance in animal models. However, it is unclear whether these results are applicable to humans. This study examined the cross-sectional association between the frequency of miso soup consumption and the blood pressure and heart rate of human subjects. Methods A total of 527 subjects of 50 to 81 years of age who participated in our hospital health examination were enrolled in the present study and divided into four groups based on the frequency of their miso soup consumption ([bowl(s) of miso soup/week] Group 1, <1; Group2, <4; Group3, <7; Group4, ≥7). The blood pressure levels and heart rates of the subjects in each group were compared. Furthermore, a multivariable analysis was performed to determine whether miso soup consumption was an independent factor affecting the incidence of hypertension or the heart rate. Results The frequency of miso soup consumption was not associated with blood pressure. The heart rate was, however, lower in the participants who reported a high frequency of miso soup consumption. A multivariable analysis revealed that the participants who reported a high frequency of miso soup consumption were more likely to have a lower heart rate, but that the consumption of miso soup was not associated with the incidence of hypertension. Conclusion These results indicate that miso soup consumption might decrease the heart rate, but not have a significant effect on the blood pressure of in middle-aged and elderly Japanese individuals.

Nocardioides sp. PD653 genes hcbA1, hcbA2, and hcbA3 encode enzymes that catalyze the oxidative dehalogenation of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), which is one of the most recalcitrant persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In this study, HcbA1, HcbA2, and HcbA3 were heterologously expressed and characterized. Among the flavin species tested, HcbA3 showed the highest affinity for FMN with a Kd value of 0.75±0.17 µM. Kinetic assays revealed that HcbA3 followed a ping-pong bi–bi mechanism for the reduction of flavins. The Km for NADH and FMN was 51.66±11.58 µM and 4.43±0.69 µM, respectively. For both NADH and FMN, the Vmax and kcat were 2.21±0.86 µM and 66.74±5.91 sec−1, respectively. We also successfully reconstituted the oxidative dehalogenase reaction in vitro, which consisted of HcbA1, HcbA3, FMN, and NADH, suggesting that HcbA3 may be the partner reductase component for HcbA1 in Nocardioides sp. PD653.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of assisted and resisted training using different weight balls on ball speed and accuracy in baseball pitching. Eight male university baseball players were assigned as subjects. The experiment used a standard 145-gram baseball and two heavier or lighter balls with weights increased or decreased by 10% respectively. The subjects were required to pitch these balls and/or standard ball either six or eighteen times under different training trial conditions: 1) pitching the weighted ball only, 2) pitching the lightened ball only, 3) pitching the standard ball only, and 4) pitching three kinds of balls in order of the weighted, standard and lightened balls. Immediately after each training trial, the standard ball was pitched five times respectively (test trial). The ball speed of each trial was measured with a speed gun, and the distance from the center of target to the position of the ball pitched on the target was calculated using a video digitizing system. The results are summarized as follows: 1) In the training trials, the ball speed increased as the ball weight was decreased. 2) In the test trials, immediately after pitching the lightened ball both six (6Atest) and eighteen times (18Atest), and the three different kinds of balls eighteen times (18Ctest), the ball speeds were seen to be significantly higher than that of other test trials (p<0.01). 3) Although there were no significant differences in the ball speed in the above three test trials, a relatively higher ball speed was observed in 18Atest. 4) As for the distance from the center of target to the position of the ball pitched on the target, there were no significant differences among any trials.
