Objective: Most cases of severe metabolic alkalosis have many causes that may result in renal failure and death. Therefore, these should be treated promptly for successful recovery.Patient: A 61-year-old man was hospitalized due to an acute kidney injury (creatinine level of 4.36 mg/dL) after a 3-month history of anorexia and recurrent vomiting. He had been treated for tuberculosis in the past.Results: Blood gas analysis revealed severe metabolic alkalosis with pH=7.66, HCO3=94 mmol/L, and pCO2=82.0 mmHg. Routine biochemical examination revealed severe hypokalemia (K 2.9 mEq/L) that was associated with prolonged QTc interval (0.52 seconds) on the electrocardiogram. Gastrofiberscopic examination also revealed severe stenosis and ulcerated scarring of the gastric pylorus and severe esophagitis. Intravenous hydration and correction of hypokalemia improved renal function and resolved metabolic alkalosis. An investigation that was repeated after 6 days revealed a creatinine level of 1.58 mg/dL, pH=7.47, HCO3=23.4 mmol/L, K=3.6 mEq/L, and QTc of 0.45 seconds. The patient underwent gastrectomy and adenocarcinoma was observed.Conclusion: We described a resolved case of severe metabolic alkalosis and acute kidney injury in a rural medical setting following conservative management.

We introduce a new framework for the automatic selection of the best views of 3D models based on the assumption that models belonging to the same class of shapes share the same salient features. The main issue is learning these features. We propose an algorithm for computing these features and their corresponding saliency value. At the learning stage, a large set of features are computed from every model and a boosting algorithm is applied to learn the classification function in the feature space. AdaBoost learns a classifier that relies on a small subset of the features with the mean of weak classifiers, and provides an efficient way for feature selection and combination. Moreover it assigns weights to the selected features which we interpret as a measure of the feature saliency within the class. Our experiments using the LightField (LFD) descriptors and the Princeton Shape Benchmark show the suitability of the approach to 3D shape classification and best-view selection for online visual browsing of 3D data collections.

本論文では,ディジタルカメラで撮影した画像中に存在する文字情報の抽出,認識,翻訳等の処理を行うシステムの構築を目指して,画像の高品質化によって認識性能を向上する手法を提案する.提案手法では,ディジタルカメラで撮影した文字列を含む画像に対し,JPEG圧縮によるノイズの削減とDCTの高周波成分復元による拡大,2値化処理を行い,市販の文字認識ソフトウエアを用いて文字認識を行った.画像の拡大では,拡大に伴うモスキートノイズやブロックノイズの影響が少ない拡大手法を提案する.文書画像をディジタルカメラで撮影した画像と看板やプレートに書かれた文字を撮影した画像に対して実験を行った.本報告では,画像の高品質化処理を目的としているため,文字の切り出しは手作業で行っている.これらの対象画像に対し,拡大処理を施さずに2値化処理を行った文字画像や共1次内挿法で拡大した画像と比べ,従来の文字認識技術を用いて文字認識率を向上することができた.

Quadratic map basins is a method used to generate the images of Julia and Mandelbrot sets and has been applied to visualize the attractors of iterated function systems (IFS). Three dimensional extension of such mapping with animation is an aspiring goal and a challenging task. In this paper an extension algorithm of quadratic map basin for classifying points in the complement of a 3-D linear fractal shapes are discussed. Such extension produces fractal surfaces that exhibit self-similarity and suggest smooth evolution under animation. The proposed technique has fast computations and simple representation whereby a computer can automatically select parameters and generate a large collection of aesthetically appealing 3-D fractal patterns. The simple representation and the speed of computation of our algorithm make 3-D fractal patterns reliable for interactive machine.

Because motion capture system enabled us to capture a number of human motions, the demand for a method to easily browse the captured motion database has been increasing. In this paper, we propose a method to generate simple visual outlines of motion clips, for the purpose of efficient motion data browsing. Our method unfolds a motion clip into a 2D stripe of keyframes along a timeline that is based on semantic keyframe extraction and the best view point selection for each keyframes. With our visualization, timing and order of actions in the motions are clearly visible and the contents of multiple motions are easily comparable. In addition, because our method is applicable for a wide variety of motions, it can generate outlines for a large amount of motions fully automatically.
