研究というものは、「観察する」人々の無関心に直結したり、興味を半減させたりするものであってはならず、その相互作用において、関わる者相互に及ぶ影響や彼らの変化の過程を扱うものであり、さらにその相互作用を記録・評価することにより、研究が影響する複数の過程を考慮し、結果的に研究自体に及ぶ影響の過程を扱うものである。同様に、研究者と研究対象者の関係は同一プロジェクトの完成に至るプロセスにおいては流動的であり、変化を見せることは自明なことと言わざるを得ず、それが研究そのものの特色と言わなければならない。当該研究は、具体例を扱うレベルにおいてこれらの要因を認識することで研究者の熱望する結果達成を促進する目標を考慮に入れた質的なデータ収集方法が如何に研究者の能力発揮と結びつき、同時に組織的かつ豊富なデータをもたらすかを体系的なレベルにおいて導き出す調査を行うものである。労働協約を勝ち取る努力を行った労働組合研究においては、質的リサーチが組合員の地域的二一ズの変化に如何に対応できているか、同時に硬直した理論が強制する規則のもとでは必ずしも反映されないデータを如何に鮮明に説明できるかを論ずるものである。当該研究では特に組合員オブザーバーの役割への言及を行うと同時に、筆者および他の研究者2名の貢献が研究協力者のいだく真摯な願い事に対して如何に意識的に可能か、そしてデータ収集過程を如何に細部まで適用し、組合員からのフィードバックヘの全体的および機能的解釈の提供が可能かを検証している。論文中ではまたデータ収集、収集に用いた装置、さらにその限界および他の過程を用いて補う必要性を明確にし、絶対的正当性を装う虚偽の幻想を排除すると同時にそれが素材の有機的解釈を可能とすることに言及するものである。Research is a process which, rather than being detached and no-impacting on the people it 'observes,' interacts with and changes the participants in their interactions with each other and is itself in turn affected by the processes it impinges upon by recording and evaluating them. Likewise the researcher's relationship with the researched colours the research in a fluid and changing manner over the life of a project. This study looks at how recognising these factors at an instantial level can draw out at a systemic level how a qualitative approach to data collection that takes into account the goals of helping the participants to achieve their aspirations can contribute to their empowerment and at the same time produce rich and textured data. In a study of union members as they go about winning a labour contract it discusses how qualitative research is able to respond to the changing local needs of the participants and at the same time better account for data that does not always reflect rules imposed by rigid theory. In particular it looks at the role of the participant observer and outlines how the writer and two other researchers consciously contribute to the aspirations of the people they work with and in turn are able to fine tune data collection processes and provide emic interpretations of it through feedback from the participants. The paper also describes the data collection, the equipment used in this process and its limitations, and the need to supplement it with other processes that enable an organic interpretation of the material without pretence of absolute validation.
