This paper examines the production network of the small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the relationship between wholesalers and SMEs with respect of Osaka's bicycle industry during the postwar reconstruction period. The production of bicycles increased rapidly against the background of enormous demand for consumer goods in the postwar period. The bicycle industry in Japan was characterized by a production system called the "assembly system," and many SMEs from the machine metal industry were engaged in bicycle production. Thus, the production network of SMEs and wholesalers played an important role in the revival of SMEs in Japan.
